How to choose the right
carrier for you...
- Each carrier has different
features and will fit you and
your baby differently - just
like clothing. You really
need to find out what works
best for you and your baby.
When possible, visit a local
store and try on a variety of
baby carriers. Make sure to
bring your baby with you!
- Ask for assistance! If you
have a carrier and are unsure
how to use it or you find it
uncomfortable, you should seek
out an expert to assist you.
Your carrier shouldn't be
difficult to use, or
uncomfortable for you or your
baby.
- Your baby should be worn
high enough that you should be
able to kiss the top of your
baby's head without having to
lift the baby up to meet your
lips. If you can't reach your
baby, he/she is being worn too
low and your carrier should be
adjusted.
- It is so important to choose
your carrier based on your
needs. Determine what your
needs are before purchasing.
If you are looking for a
comfortable carrier to nurse
your newborn in, then consider
a wrap style carrier like a
Moby Wrap. If you are going
for a hike you might want to
consider a Mei Tai like Baby
Hawk or a structured carrier
like Beco Baby Carriers. Both
these carries are ideal for
wearing your baby (6+ months
old) on your back. However,
each carrier has more than one
benefit. As mentioned above,
you can also use a Moby Wrap
to do a back carry, and you
can easily nurse a newborn in
a Baby Hawk. This is why it
is important to try on various
carriers to see what is most
comfortable for you and your
baby.
- Most first time baby wearers
are easily discouraged because
they feel carriers are
difficult to use. Regardless
what type of carrier you
choose, there is always a
learning curve. Please give
yourself at least one week of
regular use with your carrier
and in no time you will
realize how easy it is to
use.
- Babywearing is not just for
moms! Many dads and other
caregivers also enjoy wearing
their babies!
